Christmas Eve 2020

Christmas Eve

Thursday, December 24, 2020

It's hard to believe that it is Christmas Eve already. It sure is different. Usually my husband and I would be planning to go to the homes of our two sons on Christmas Day. We go to our second son in the morning. He makes us egg muffins which are very tasty and we watch our grandchildren open gifts. Our great-grandson turned one in November. Thank goodness for SnapChat because our granddaughter sends videos almost every day. Otherwise we would miss out on seeing the changes as he grows.

From there we would visit our oldest son and his family. Their Christmas is more laid back. Then on Boxing Day or the Sunday after Christmas our daughter and her husband arrive. We all meet back at #2 son's home for a family turkey dinner. Then on New Year's Eve afternoon our daughter and son-in-law take us all bowling.

That was how it happened in other years. This year we are all staying in our individual homes and planning to Skype or Zoom in the afternoon.

This morning while I was working in the kitchen, the house phone rang. (Yes, we still have a house phone. Most of the calls are telemarketers and we talk about canceling it but so far, we haven't.) As soon as I heard his voice, I knew it was my Uncle Dan, my mother's 92 year old brother. Before his wife died last year, she was the one who would make the phone calls. We had a wonderful conversation. It was so good to hear from him. It really brightened my day. He is still in his own apartment and is doing well although he feels that his short-term memory is not good.

It is just the two of us so I haven't done as much baking as other years. Himself can stay away from extra sweets but that is one of my weaknesses so it is better if they are not available. I did make a pumpkin pie at his request. We will be having roast chicken as our Christmas dinner.

My walk this afternoon was cold. It was -2C (27*F) When I went by the grocery store there was a line outside waiting for someone to leave to someone else could go in. It isn't usually that busy. Our part of the province is already in the grey zone. The rest of the province will be joining us either on Christmas Day or Boxing Day. Since we are already there, I haven't paid a lot of attention. Let's hope people are listening and staying at home away from other people.

There is no snow. The weatherman said there could be freezing rain. That's another reason to stay safe at home.
