Waiting, May 2019

Waiting

Tuesday, May 07, 2019

We spend a lot of time waiting. Yesterday morning my husband left on his motorcycle to have a late breakfast with 3 friends. After breakfast he went to Hotel Dieu to see his sister. Carol suffered a stroke 2 1/2 weeks ago and is not doing well. Shortly before noon, I got a phone call. I was outside working in my garden. Often I forget to carry my cell phone but yesterday I had it with me.

Himself wanted me to come to the hospital. My first thought was that there was a problem with Carol. Then I heard a voice in the background saying, "your birthday is October 14, 1946" and I knew the problem was not with Carol.

When he is upset, he gets emotional and has difficulty talking. He could not tell me what was wrong. I knew it would take me at least an hour to get to the hospital in downtown Windsor. I called our son who works in Windsor and asked if he could sit with his father until I could get there. He was able to do that.

In the meantime, Himself called again and asked me to pick up his friend, Craig. Craig also rides a motorcycle and was willing to take our bike to his place. At that point, it seemed that Himself was more concerned about the bike than he was about himself. Fortunately, I know where Craig lives and it was on my way. (The other friends he considered live on the other side of the city and city driving is not my forte so I was glad Craig was willing.)

Eventually we arrived and found the ER. Someone had given our son a parking pass which he passed on to me. He left with Craig to get the bike. The bike is now safely stored in Craig's garage.

And Himself and I sat, waiting for his name to be called. He had blood work and I think an EKG before I got there. It was 6:45 when his name was finally called and we moved into the ER to wait some more. More blood and a CT scan and wait again. A doctor came with questions and hints as to what they were looking for. [Himself had an aeortic valve replacement 2 years ago. Apparently there is something that sometimes happens after that operation which is sometimes indicated by the back pain Himself was experiencing. The CT scan ruled that out - and I forget what the doctor called it.]

It might be gallbladder. He needs an ultrasound. Ultrasound is not available until 7 a.m. At least now I knew I could leave because Himself would be spending the night where he was. By that point, I had such a headache and it was way past my bedtime. Himself had been napping most of the evening. They were giving him antibiotics and other 'stuff'.

There was one other car still in the parking lot when I left at 1:30. City driving is not a problem at that hour. I even tried the roundabout on highway #3. I have been afraid of it and figured there would never be less traffic for giving it a try.

And now I am still waiting. Himself has had the ultrasound and more blood tests. He is waiting to hear what comes next. He told me to stay here until he calls.

As for my mile a day - I didn't specifically go for a mile walk but my walks back and forth to the parking lot throughout the day, was more than a mile.

And so we wait some more. If any of you are pray-ers, we would appreciate any prayers you can offer.

Edit: at 1:29 p.m. I got a call to come pick him up. They will be doing follow-up tests but for now he is coming home.
