Meeting with Heart Doctor, May 2016

Update

Friday, May 13, 2016

I am ready for another vacation.

As I have shared with some of you, Himself has been having some health issues. He has been extremely tired and gets winded with short walks. He was told he will need a heart valve operation. (I don't know proper medical terms. I am just saying it the way I understand it.)

For some reason, his blood hemoglobin is low. It was tested about a week ago and it was 76. A couple days later it was 73. Last Friday afternoon, his doctor sent him to the hospital for a blood transfusion. Every visit to the hospital involves lots of waiting. We got there about 2:30. About 8:30 we were notified they were giving him 2 pints of blood. It would take approx. 3 hours for each pint. Both he and the nurse suggested I should return home which I did. They started the transfusion at 9. He finished about 3 a.m. and called a taxi to bring him home rather than call me.

I was very glad for his consideration because I was tired. Saturday was the Iron Hawk 5K. I did not decide until Saturday morning that I would do it. I knew that walking would help me feel better and it did. It was a beautiful morning. My son, daughter and grandson did the duathlon part of the event.

Tuesday morning we were back at the hospital for his scheduled upper and lower GI to see if they can determine if or where there might be internal bleeding causing the blood problem. That went well and we were home in the afternoon. He will see his doctor this week to hear the results.

Wednesday afternoon we drove 2 1/2 hours to our daughter's to spend the night. He had an appointment in London (about 40 minutes from daughter's). We stayed with her so that we would not have to get up extra early like we would if we left from our house. We were not real sure where we were going. We found the hospital and were there in plenty of time. What a busy place that hospital is.

He had the echocardiogram and then we had another wait for the doctor to see it before meeting with us. We have talked with friends who have had various heart operations done by this doctor and each one of them praised her highly so we were not nervous to meet her. She was very nice and took time to explain the procedure. It will probably be done in a couple months. We have to get the results from this week's procedure first to make sure there is no other problem.

Himself is looking forward to getting the valve fixed and feeling more like himself again. He drove his motorcycle to daughter's on Wednesday so that he would be able to join in the Friday the 13th ride to Port Dover. He took a folding chair so that he could sit on Main Street and people watch. He had a good day and is now home. The dogs and I came home in our van this morning. We met so many bikes on their way to Dover. I watched some of it on the web cam they had set up on the main street.

I am glad he is able to ride his bike and find enjoyment from something that takes his mind off what is to come.
