Why I Want to Be Healthy and Fit, 2017

Why Do You Want to Be Healthy and Fit?

Sunday, April 30, 2017

[Let's try again. Don't you hate it when you have a blog three-quarters finished and the computer hiccups and everything is gone? I will try to re-create my thought process.]

Spark Guy has us thinking about why we want to be healthy and fit. He suggested that our reasons may change over time.

Several years ago, I joined SparkPeople. It was September 2004 to be exact. If I had realized I would still be here so many years later, perhaps I would have kept better records. I was about 40 pounds heavier than I am currently. My goal at the time was to get below 200. Achieving that goal took longer than planned but eventually I did it. My reason for wanting it was achy knees and the desire to feel better.

So why do I want to be healthy and fit now that I am 71 years old?

In 2016, my husband was waiting to have heart surgery. He had limited energy and we stayed close to home, partly because we were waiting for 'the' phone call but mostly because he did not feel well enough to do much.

In September, he finally got his new aortic valve and he is well again. The waiting period and watching him, helped me appreciate my own health and gave me a strong desire to do whatever I can to maintain it. I may be a lower weight than I once was but I am still classified as obese. I want to reach the overweight category and who knows maybe someday I can be normal.

We enjoy travel. There are places we would like to visit. When one is healthy and fit, she can do that more easily. It is my desire to see both British Columbia and Newfoundland.

Naturally, we all want to live longer and if we are going to do that, we want to be healthy. I enjoy watching videos that show seniors doing activities that people consider they can't do because they are 'too old'. I want to be one of those seniors. I was in my 60s when I signed up for my first 5k. I mostly walk them but I have fun doing it.

To celebrate turning 70, I signed up for my first half marathon. My daughter was kind enough to walk with me. Perhaps I can do another when I reach 75 if I emoticon
