Newfoundland, 2019

Packing Again

Monday, June 10, 2019

My vacation is winding down. It has been good to be home with my sister and brother but Himself misses me. It is good to be missed.

My sister met my plane in Halifax and we headed right to North Sydney to catch a ferry to Newfoundland. It takes about 7 hours to cross and it was nighttime so we caught snatches of sleep as we could. In the morning we drove to her daughter-in-law's parents where her DIL and granddaughter were visiting. They served us a wonderful breakfast and then DIL acted as a tour guide for the area.

After our tour we headed toward Cornerbrook where we had rooms booked at Grenfell Residence (Memorial University of Newfoundland). That night we went to see Aladdin at the theater. I cannot comment on the movie as I slept through much of it.

There was lots of driving on Wednesday but some of it was next to water and very pretty. Traffic was light. We did see some wild life.

(It was a young moose in case you can't tell.)

We visited Gros Morne National Park. It would have been easy to spend all of our time there. There are many walking trails.

We stopped at The Arches Provincial Park  and enjoyed some time walking around.

Our home for the night was a bed and breakfast in Flower's Cove.  (My sister had done the research to find places for us to stay.) Our hostess was wonderful. After we brought our bags in, she made us tea and sat with us sharing information about the area. We went out again to see more and to get some supper. We both slept well and Maggie made us breakfast before we made our early morning departure. We wanted to get to St. Anthony in time to catch the boat tour to see icebergs since that was one of our main reasons for taking this trip.

We made it in plenty of time. One of the funny parts of the story was meeting some of the other people on the boat. Would you believe there were two couples from my area back in Ontario?

We were out on the boat for a couple hours. Our guide was Steve and he was so interesting as he told us about icebergs and life in Newfoundland. After that trip we drove to L'Anse aux Meadows.

It had barely opened for the season.  - path to some of the displays.

We enjoyed chatting with this young man not only because he was interesting but because he had a fire and we were cold from our walk to the dwelling.

We spent the rest of the day driving around St. Anthony. We stayed at Crow's Nest Inn www.crowsnestinn.ca/ It was very nice. We may have been the only guests that night. In the morning, we drove back to Cornerbrook to the Grenfell Residence. We stopped at a grocery store and got something for supper so we wouldn't have to go out again.

This young fellow (or girl) led us part of the way before he/she found a place on the side of the road that was satisfactory for leaving the highway.

Saturday we went back to DIL's parents. They made us a lovely dinner and even gave us leftovers for our trip home on Sunday. DIL traveled to the ferry with us and crossed back to Nova Scotia. On Sunday, we drove back to the farm. Monday, my sister took DIL to Halifax for her plane back to her family.

And thus ended our time in Newfoundland. It was a great week.
