Church Anniversary, Feb. 2016

Day of Remembering

Sunday, February 07, 2016

Today my church, Harrow Baptist, celebrated an anniversary - 140 years. Two former pastors and their wives were here for the celebration. It was so good to see them and get hugs. I had worked with both men and was friends with both wives because I was the church secretary for 20 years. I retired in May 2004.

At 10 the older pastor spoke during the Sunday School time. He is the one who had hired me. At the time he was looking for someone to do some typing. I enjoy typing and so I approached him to offer to help. I was a stay-at-home mother and hadn't worked in an office for a number of years. In fact, I trained and worked on a manual typewriter. The church had an electric typewriter and I didn't even know how to turn it on. emoticon Of course I figured it out. By the time I left, I was using a computer. The Gestetner was long gone. That was a machine I was not sorry to see go.

Pastor brought up stories and people we older ones remember. I found myself getting a bit emotional at times. It was good to see them again and to remember.

Before the sermon, there was a short video put together by a teenager in the congregation. The actors were a 4-generation family - a girl about 7, her dad, his mother and the great-grandmother. It told a bit about the history of the church. I thought it was well done.

There have been new families over the past few years. I no longer know everyone like I did when I was working there. It is hard for me to realize that most people don't even realize I HAD worked there. I am friends with the current secretary and drop in occasionally for a visit. She works longer hours than I did. She is doing a good job.

Following the service, we had broasted chicken and potatoes in the gymnasium. It was good to see everyone who came out. I had my dinner and did not even look at the dessert table (my downfall).

It is good to remember and give thanks.
