Mother-Daughter Vacation 2016

Mother-Daughter Vacation Monday

Thursday, April 28, 2016

On Monday we got up and had breakfast at the motel. We both have similar body clocks which is good. We both like going to bed early and getting up early. We didn't realize how close to Gatlinburg we were when we stopped for the night. My reservation at the vacation share started on Monday afternoon. We checked the desk in the morning and they allowed us to come in and get settled early.

This is the outside of our home for the week. After we got unpacked, we took a trolley to downtown Gatlinburg. We did some tourist 'stuff' walking in and out of stores that caught our fancy. A dog t-shirt supporting her husband's favourite football team caught K's eye so that was one store we went in to look around.

I thought the sign was cute. We didn't buy anything. They now have doggie strollers for little dogs. We have actually seen one in use. K. has two black labs so needless to say a doggie stroller is NOT what she needs. emoticon

It was getting warm. The temperature in Gatlinburg this week has been unseasonably high. We stopped at a wal-mart to get me a pair of lighter pants. My jeans are just too warm for the weather.

This trolley is like the one we took downtown and later back to where we had left the car parked. It was $.50 each. There is also some kind of pass that allows you to use the trolleys all day for $2. We haven't done that because after the first day, we used the van to go exploring.

I took this through the trolley window on our way back to the van.

We shared a sub sandwich while we were downtown. There was a grocery store across from where we had parked the van so we did some shopping for our needs before going 'home'. We had a store-prepared pizza that first night. It wasn't too bad.

Daughter made use of the pool and hot tub. By then I was too tired to get changed and go with her. We were both in bed by 10.

Mother Daughter Vacation Tuesday, Cades Cove

Monday, May 02, 2016

Tuesday morning, we had an 8:30 appointment with the vacation share people. We drove back to Sevierville only to find that the lady who registered me had given me the wrong information. We could have stayed in Gatlinburg. Needless to say, their mistake made me a few minutes late but that part was not a problem. We listened to all the reasons my husband and I should invest more money in the vacation share. (If you don't listen to the salesman, you have to pay.) When I said "no" and signed the waiver, the atmosphere was no longer friendly. They did still give me the promised gift card. Daughter was surprised they didn't offer me anything for the wasted time and gas because of the incorrect directions about where I was supposed to go.

Released from my obligation, I was free to enjoy our vacation. We had a sandwich in our room and then went exploring. First stop - Cades Cove. Before we left home, my daughter-in-law told me about Cades Cove. Now I will join her in agreement that you should see Cades Cove if you visit Gatlinburg.

"When Cades Cove was a farming community, an unpaved two-way road followed the same general route as the present 11-mile one-way Loop Road." - from Cades Cove information

We did not stop at all the places you could stop but we did visit the Methodist Church.
"J.D. McCampbell, a blacksmith and carpenter, built this church in 115 days for $115. He later served many years as its minister." - from the Cades Cove information

We took another walk in an open field. Daughter must have been behind me.

And here she is taking a selfie. emoticon

We visited Elijah Oliver Place.

We came to the barn first.

Further along was the cabin.

When it was time to return to the van, we chose the other path. That was fine until we were almost back and the trail was less well-defined. For awhile we were unsure if we were going to have to go back to the cabin and take the first trail. Then we saw some cars so we knew we were back in civilization.

We found the road but we were still not sure which direction to go to find the parked van. Eventually we figured it out and drove on to the Visitor Center.

Aunt Becky's boarding house.

"Aunt Becky reared her brother's children, ran the boarding house, took care of farm and cattle-raising chores and lived a long and successful life. She died in 1940 at the age of 96. After her death the house was moved from its original site on the Forge Creek Road to its present location." (from Cades Cove information)

On our way home, we saw this animal. After much discussion we are guessing it was a coyote.

Whenever there is a bear sighting, there are lots of cars. The cars are usually the hint there is something to see.

Back at our temporary home, Daughter made spaghetti with meat sauce for our supper. She took very good care of me. She spent some time in the pool but by then I was too tired to change so I relaxed until bedtime.
