What a Week

Monday afternoon my husband was riding his exercise bike. He has it sitting in the living room in case he gets the urge to get on it. That particular day he stopped and called his doctor's office. In recent weeks, he has experienced shortness of breath. He would always stop whatever he was doing and take some deep breaths. On Monday, he had a pain in the center of his chest. He was advised to go to the hospital which we did.
By the time we got to emergency, the pain had gone away but they did an examination anyway. They took blood. Apparently, one of the blood tests can tell them whether or not he had a heart attack. He had not but they were concerned because his hemoglobin was low. It was determined he would be admitted. By the time all this took place, it was close to 11 p.m. It was shortly after midnight by the time I got home. The battery on his cell phone was almost dead so I could not leave his phone. He didn't even have a toothbrush.
Tuesday morning he called me from the hospital. He wanted me to stay home until he knew what was going to happen. He was waiting for a doctor to see him. We live about 30 minutes from the hospital.
It was about 4 when he called after the doctor had been in. He was going to have a colonoscopy on Wednesday. After his call, I drove to the hospital with the items he had requested. While I was there, they started the process to prepare him. Visiting hours end at 8. I left shortly before that. He received a blood transfusion after I left. He had his cell phone so we were able to text. That made things easier for us.
Wednesday morning is when he usually volunteers at the hospital. Normally we are there by 8:30. I help in the Hospice sewing room making small quilts and burden bears. That day, I was a bit late. I didn't want the day to be too long for the dogs to be shut in since I didn't know how long I would be gone from home.
At noon we were finished with our sewing and I went to Hubby's room. While he read the newspaper, I went to the cafeteria for some lunch. We still didn't know what time they would be doing his procedure. He was in surprisingly good spirits. The transfusion helped improve the hemoglobin number.
They came to take him to the preparation area around 2. I was with him until about 4 when they took him for his colonoscopy and something gastric. They told me it wouldn't take very long. I went to the waiting room. A nurse came for me when she was taking him back to his room. They had already ordered some food for him. It came quickly and he enjoyed it.
It turns out he has diverticulosis, hemorrhoids, and a small hiatal hernia. The doctor thinks the hemorrhoids may be causing bleeding which led to the low hemoglobin. He is on iron pills until he goes back to the doctor in a few weeks.
After he ate, the doctor came to discharge him from the hospital. We were home by 6:30. I think the dogs were very happy to see us.
