Our Weekend Away
Monday, October 15, 2012
Saturday morning we stopped at our son's to drop off our dog, Buddy. From there we headed to Ambassador Bridge to cross into Michigan. Traffic was good on 75 until we were somewhere around Monroe when everything started backing up. When we had a chance we got off the freeway. Unfortunately, the area we moved to had a detour and it wasn't long before we didn't know where we were. Ted was able to ask someone if the road we were on was the right way to Toledo. He said, "follow me. I am going to Toledo." He helped us get back to where we needed to be.
We stopped in Bowling Green for some lunch. The town was getting ready for a football game. I was wishing the band we could see in the field would start practising so I could hear them but that didn't happen.
After lunch we continued on our way. We decided to not go back onto 75 but to find an alternate route. We prefer country roads anyway.
The rest of our ride was uneventful and we arrived at my friend's house around 3:30. She took us for a ride around her town. She showed us the house she and her husband had lived in prior to moving into town. She also showed us the farm where she and her two sisters and two brothers had grown up. At suppertime, we three went to her sister's house for pizza. Another of our quilting friends was staying with her sister for the weekend so there were hugs all round and we proceeded to share stories and enjoy the pizza. It was a happy, laughter-filled evening.
Shortly after we got back to Judy's house, her husband got home. We had not met him before but it didn't take long to feel like old friends. We stayed up until 1 talking.
Sunday morning, Judy cooked the breakfast casserole she had prepared on Saturday. Pam and her company joined us. After eating, we got ready for our train ride to Metamora. www.MetamoraIndiana.com I think it was just after noon when we boarded the train.
It was fun although a bit noisy every time the train track crossed the highway and the train whistle blew. All the crew are volunteers.

We thought the conductor really looked the part.
Most of the scenery along the route was very pretty. In one field we saw several deer scampering off, scared by the whistle we were sure.

Several of the shops in Metamora were not open but there was still enough for us to see. One of my favourites was Grannies Cookie Jars and Ice Cream. I forget just how many cookie jars were on display but it was very interesting to see. This is the window with some of the jars.

Before we got back on the train, Ted bought a jar of peach jam, one of his favourites.
I think the trip back went a bit quicker than the trip out.
Back at Judy's we collected her husband, daughter, granddaughter, father and father-in-law and we all headed out for supper. What a fun evening it was with their family. The two older gentlemen are 84 and her granddaughter is 7. I won't share the ages of the rest of us. LOL
After supper, everyone was delivered back to their homes and the rest of us spent time together at Judy's. We knew we had to get to bed earlier than we had Sat. night because Judy had to leave for work at 8:10 this morning. We saw her before she left for work but her husband started later so we didn't see him before we left to start homeward.
We stayed off the freeway until we were almost to Detroit. It was a long day but very pleasant. We stopped at a couple motorcycle shops to price tires but we didn't buy any.
We crossed back into Canada around 5 p.m. We stopped to get Buddy and arranged for Wiggles to spend another night with our granddaughters.
Ted had a nice birthday weekend (his actual birthday is the 14th) and today is our oldest son's birthday.
