Christmas Eve

It is Christmas Eve. We are warm and safe. I shopped for groceries yesterday. Today I will get busy baking. It is quiet here. At my stage in life the holidays bring back memories.
The year our daughter was born was the first time my parents came to Ontario for a visit. They were not here for Christmas but it was in December just before the Big Day. My cousin also brought my grandparents that year for their only visit.
Then there was the year after we had moved to this house. Mom and Dad came in time to attend our sons' Christmas program at school and other activities at church. I remember Mom and the kids rolling out cookies together.
After Dad died, Mom and my brother and his two children flew up for Christmas one time. They missed the first day of their vacation because their flight was delayed due to bad weather, much like many who are trying to get home this year. My niece and nephew were not thrilled to be away from home at Christmas. I understand their feelings but we sure were glad they were here.
My sister has been with us for a couple Christmases. One year she was working in Texas and flew into Detroit where we picked her up. Another time, she was back in Canada near Ottawa. She, her son, his wife and baby drove here. That was a full house but it was fun.
Now my husband and I are alone. My parents are gone. My brother and sister have teen and adult children and stay with them. We drive to spend time with our own adult children and our grandchildren. We are glad our drive is only about 30 minutes. After our move to Ontario, we were never able to make the trip back to Nova Scotia for Christmas The risk of being caught somewhere because of bad weather always held us back.
So many memories and as I tried to dredge them up, I realize that I must take time to start writing them down before they fade completely.
