Detroit Free Press Marathon (2013)

Detroit Free Press Marathon

Sunday, October 20, 2013

Today was the Detroit Marathon www.freepmarathon.com/ . The first time I heard of it was a number of years ago when there was an article in the Windsor Star about 6 Canadian women who were going to run. I don't remember how they did or anything else.

Today my son and daughter were running the half marathon. Brian has done half marathons before but it was a first for Kathryn. Hubby and I got up at 5 so we could travel to the city to cheer them on. We stopped at our son's to get Kathryn's husband and our grandson and headed downtown.

Kathryn had asked us to be on the water side of Riverside Drive. It was still dark when we got there which meant it was cold. Fortunately, there was no rain.

Finally we could see some action. The first athletes were those on recumbent bikes (at least that is what I 'think' the bikes are called.) Each of those athletes was accompanied by someone on a bicycle.

And then the runners started. I was glad daylight was coming as I wanted to take pictures and they were not turning out well with the flash.

Finally we saw Brian coming. He ran over to us and gave me a kiss before moving on. I was so happy to see him, I didn't get his picture.

We tried to judge when Kathryn might be coming. We were beginning to wonder if we had missed her. There were thousands of people running.

Here she comes.

Kathryn's husband had brought their dog. Tucker was happy to see her.

She stopped briefly, gave me a kiss and took off again.

Do you like my sign? I could tell when someone was reading it. They would get a little grin and give me a high five or thumbs up or tell me, "I like your sign."

Kathryn was happy with her time; Brian not so much. Whatever their times were, I just know I am very proud of both of them.

p.s. In the Windsor Star this morning (Monday), it said there were 27,000 participants. There were runners, walkers, wheelchair racers, and handcyclists participating in either the full or half marathon, the 5K or relay. Not everyone crossed into Canada. The mayor of Windsor and his brother were among the half marathoners.
